New Pattern Released - Hanging Pod Fabric Baskets

I love these small storage pods. They can be hung on a pegboard in your craftroom or office and can hold all kinds of tools. But they could also be used in a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or baby's room.

I named my shoppe Irish Corkies Primitives for my yellow lab Corkie, her full name is Bailey’s Irish Cork.

I have been on Etsy since 2006, but really started selling there about a year ago.

3. What type of items do you offer?

I offer hand-crafted primitive signs, primitive shelf-sitter blocks, and peg racks. I hope to expand into more furniture items in the future.

I have been crafting for the past 10 years or so but have really focused on my primitive signs for the past 6 years.

5. Who or What inspires you?

I love the olde look and feel of times gone by and I just love how prim signs and decorating can make your home feel like it is from the 1800’s with a few modern throw ins.

1. What is the name of your Etsy shop and why did you choose that name?

The Old Cupboard Door. I love looking in old cupboard doors; discovering what treasure might be hidden there. I love the beauty of vintage cupboard doors and the history they hold. Just today I opened the doors to an old Hoosier cabinet in a local antique shop to see what was there. There was nothing there but I could imagine all the goodies it once held. The sugar and flour with their modern labels of that era. Sweets for the children and maybe even the old can that held mad money for the lady of the house.

2. How long have you been on Etsy?

Since August 2009

3. What type of items do you offer?

I offer hand painted items painted on vintage pieces or wood cut outs.

4. How long have you been crafting?

Oh my goodness, it seems like forever. I have been painting in oils since 1979. I’ve been involved in decorative painting since 1992.

5. Who or What inspires you?

I’m not sure what inspires me. Ideas pop into my head that I can’t wait to try. It may happen in the middle of the night or while I’m driving down the road. I’ve even taken my note pad out during church and written down ideas and sketched out pictures.

6. What is your favorite item in your shop and why?

I really like the “Sammy’s Letter” that I painted on a sewing machine box. It takes me back to my childhood and the “Night Before Christmas” story. The thought of even a mouse like Sammy writing Santa his letter with such a child like hope is so precious. It reminds me of the innocence and trust of a child.

1. What is the name of your Etsy shop and why did you choose that name?
Painted Panache by Joann Y Wheeler. I choose that name because that's the name I have had my business under since I began painting porcelain in 1986. Panache is defined as distinctive and stylish elegance.The word seemed to fit especially with my handpainted porcelain.
2. How long have you been on Etsy?
Since February 2007
3. What type of items do you offer?

My shop features handpainted porcelain (china painting), decorative painting on wood and glass, and miniature art (ACEO's) in various mediums.

4. How long have you been crafting?

For at least 30 years.

5. Who or What inspires you?
Nature. I love to paint flowers and animals. God inspires me. I enjoy doing religious paints as well. And i'm one of those people who cannot paint unless inspired by something.
6. What is your favorite item in your shop and why?

I can't say that I have one thing that is my absolute favorite. Every time I get one, it seems like someone buys it! However, I do tend to favor my handpainted porcelain because I believe it's one of those things that you can pass down for generations to come.

Neck/Back Wheat Bag Tutorial

Here is the wheat bag for your back/neck that I promised you. It has been a busy week so I am a little late with it but finally here it is. Enjoy!

Neck/Back Wheat Bag Tutorial

I designed this wheat bag to fit over my shoulders and back to ease my back pain from sitting over my sewing machine or spending long periods of time sitting at my computer. I have even used it while sewing and not only does the heat feel good but the weight of the bag makes me sit straighter. My friends who have fibromyalgia find this soothing for their back/neck pain, too.

**This warning bears repeating because occasionally you will hear of someone starting a fire in their microwave or burning themselves with a too hot bag.

Never heat this bag for more than 3 minutes. Microwaves vary so start with 2 minutes and add up to another minute if it doesn’t seem warm enough. Also, let it cool completely before reheating. This is not intended for use by children.

SUPPLIES:

¾ yard of cotton muslin for the bag

7/8 yard of cotton flannel fabric for the cover

18” of velcro

6 cups of cleaned wheat (I found mine at the feed store)

DIRECTIONS:

Print out the patterns and tape them together. Add extra inches where indicated on the pattern.

The inner red lines are for the wheat bag and the black lines are for the cover.

Cut two bag pieces on the fold out of muslin.

Press a ¼ inch hem on the bottom of the muslin pieces. With the hem on the outside, pin the two sides together and stitch all around leaving the bottom hemmed edge open. Turn right side out and press.

Now you need to press in the seam allowances for the bag. Fold the bag at each point where you see the red lines and press a seam line in to follow when you stitch the individual pockets of the bag.

Fill the shoulder flap with 2/3 c. of wheat. To keep the wheat from moving around while you sew the seam, pin right next to the wheat using a lot of pins so no stray wheat moves into your sewing path. Now sew that section closed along the pressed seam line. The red arrow points to the pressed seam line to follow.

( If you sew over any wheat kernels it will break your needle so sew slowly and check for stray wheat kernels as you sew.)

Repeat for the other shoulder flap.

Next you will sew the three seam lines running up and down on the bag. You will now have four sections in the bag.

Working with two of them at a time, add 2/3 c. to each section. Pin against the wheat as you fill each section. Then you will stitch across the pressed seam line.

Repeat for the other two sections. You now have one row finished.

Continue to fill the bag two sections at a time with 2/3 c. of wheat, pin and stitch across the pressed seam line.

On the last row you will be stitching the opening across the bottom of the bag closed.

Here is the finished bag.

BAG COVER:

Cut two cover pieces out of flannel on the fold. The back will be cut 2 inches longer than the front cover.

Fold over the bottom of each piece of fabric ¼ inch and then again ¼ inch to form a hem.

Stitch across the hem.

Lay the two pieces right sides together and pin around the top section to hold it together. The longer section will be on the bottom.

Fold the top section back about an inch so the right side is facing up. Pin one section of Velcro evenly across.

The back section is folded up so the wrong side is showing. Pin the other section of Velcro evenly across here.

Stitch the Velcro to the cover.

One piece of Velcro is now stitched to the outside of the cover and the other to the inside.

Fold the back piece up and then press the other side down so the Velcro meets. Pin the rest of the cover together and stitch along the sides and around the shoulder flaps. Open the Velcro bottom and turn right side out and press. Put the wheat bag inside the cover and you are done.

I heat this size bag for 2 ½ minutes in my microwave. Microwave times can vary depending on the microwave size so you may need a bit longer or shorter time.

Pioneer Loft is my name. It's a name I came up with for my business years ago. We have a small farm and there is a plaque on the house that says "PIONEER HOUSE", since the house was built so long ago (1860). We have a barn, and I always had a liking of lofts in barns, so I put the two words together from that. (Plus I hope to have a store in our barn & loft one day!)

3. What type of items do you offer?

Mostly primitives, but some cottage items, too. I sew, stencil, and tole paint and my hubby makes small furniture with a prim finish. I love to make dolls the most, but do a lot of things from old quilts like tablerunners, candle mats, pillows, check book covers, ornaments & more.

4. How long have you been crafting?

I started sewing in 7th grade (that would be 1968) and made most all my clothes for years. When I stayed home after having my daughter in 1982, I did stitching crafts, but I didn't sell anything I made until later in the 80's. I also took quilting classes in 1987, but have only made quilts for personal use.

5. Who or What inspires you?

God. (Also seeing other great handmade prims!)

6. What is your favorite item in your shop and why?

Dolls & bears. I just love to create charater & life out of fabric.

Wheat Bag Tutorial

I have been making wheat bags this past week and thought I would share how to make them with you.
I have found the wheat to work better than other fillings I have tried. They work wonderfully for aches and pains, pulled muscles, and would you believe they even help to break up chest congestion. Freeze a small one to relieve headaches and bumps and bruises.

First I want to issue a warning because occasionally you will hear of someone starting a fire in their microwave or burning themselves with a too hot bag.
Never heat these bags for more than 30 Seconds to 2 1/2 minutes, depending on their size. The smaller the bag the less time it needs to heat. Also, let them cool completely before reheating. If you are going to use this on a child, test it on yourself first. You would be surprised on how hot a bag can get in just 30 seconds.

SUPPLIES: for an 8 x 10 inch bag:
You will need two 8 ½ x 11 inch pieces of cotton muslin for the bag
Two pieces of cotton flannel fabric, one 9 x 12 inches and one 9 x 16 inches, for the cover
4 cups of cleaned wheat (I found mine at the feed store)
This is what the wheat should look like:

DIRECTIONS:
Press a ¼ inch seam allowance over on one short side of the muslin for a hem on both pieces of fabric. This will be the top of the bag.

With the right sides together, pressed edge on the outside, sew down one side around the bottom and up the other side.

Turn the bag right side out. Fold the bag in half lengthwise and press the folded edge to create a stitching line to follow.
Stitch on the line, creating two long pockets in the bag.

Now fold the bag the other way in half and press the folded edge to create a stitching line across the bag to follow.

Insert one cup of wheat into each side of the bag. To keep the wheat from moving around while you sew the seam, pin right next to the wheat using a lot of pins so no stray wheat moves into your sewing path.

Sew across the pressed seam line. ( If you sew over any wheat kernels it will break your needle so sew slowly and check for stray wheat kernels as you sew.)
Add a cup of wheat into each of the last two pockets. Pin along the edge of the wheat to keep it contained. Sew along the top edge to close the bag.

Here is the finished bag.

BAG COVER:

Fold over one short side of each piece of fabric ¼ inch and then again ¼ inch to form a hem.
Stitch across the hem.

Lay out the longer piece right side up. Fold the hemmed side over 2 inches to the right side.
Lay the shorter piece on top with wrong side up.

Pin sides and bottom and then stitch together along the sides and across the bottom in a ¼ inch seam.

Turn right side out and put the wheat bag inside and fold the flap over. I heat this size bag for 1 ½ minutes in my microwave. Microwave times can vary depending on the microwave size so you may need a bit longer or shorter time.

Next week I will have the tutorial for a back/shoulder Wheat Bag I devised for myself because long hours of sitting over a sewing machine leaves me with back pain.

Many purposeful/needful items. Most are

Just about all my life. My grandmother

sewing during the depression to bring in extra money.

Words from novels, poems etc. can inspire me. Then
there is God's Creation! Awesome!

Oh I guess my Yo-Yo Flower
picture that is framed. Right now they are alot of fun. I get bored easily,
(perhaps I have ADD) will thus try new things and go all out for a while
until the boredom bug bites. ! :)

Firecrackerkid Primitives. I chose this name, because I was born on the 4th of July, and my family always called me "the firecrackerkid". My father said when I was born I came out with a bang, jokingly of course. Plus it's Independence Day, and I really love my country, and my freedom so it all fits together nicely.

One-of-a-kind Woodcrafts and reproduction woodcrafts of different Early American dough bowl racks and furniture.

Twenty years.

The love of all things Primitive. Plus, the economy is what inspired my husband and myself to make our own Primitives. My husband is who inspires me, because of his hard work ethics, and the fact that he can do just about anything or any challenge put before him. He's a hard working man. A Jack-of-all-trades so to speak. He was a carpenter since he was a teenager, and even built our home along with several other homes locally. Pretty inspiring and impressive to me.

My Etsy shop name is Teresa's Prim Treasures. When I first started attending craft shows and needed to apply for a tax ID number I was told your name had to be in your title to avoid filing for a fictious name. I loved "Primitives" and wanted others to "treasure" my creations for years to come. So, putting all 3 of these together I came up with Teresa's Primitive Treasures for my website. When I opened my Etsy shop I shortened it a bit to TeresasPrimTreasures.

2. How long have you been on Etsy?
I joined Etsy in September of 2007 but didn't list anything to sell until 5 months later. So I began selling in March 2008.

3. What type of items do you offer?
My husband makes shelves, cabinets, cupboards and anything wooden I ask him to craft..... most of the time.... and I do the sanding and painting. I also love to paint and sew! You will find all 3 types of work in my shop. I love working with wool and hand stitching!

My mother is my greatest inspiration! She has a house full of antiques and ideas for projects. I love looking at old books and surfing the web for interesting patterns!

I was inspired as a youth by my Great Aunt and Grandmother that taught me to sew on an old Singer Sewing machine. Creating is Therapy for me and helps me to forget the pain and I thoroughly enjoy it!

The name of my shop is Irish Rose Creations. Many of my crocheted lace items are in the style of Irish Lace Crochet and I incorporate roses in many of these items so I just combined these two concepts

I’ve been on Etsy for over a year now

3. What type of items do you offer?
Primarily I offer crocheted lace doilies and heirloom afghans, as well as other vintage-inspired needful such as greeting cards and tags, and soy candles.

4. How long have you been crafting?
This is kind of like asking me how old I am. I’ve been crocheting and crafting for well over thirty years now. My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was twelve and I’ve been at it ever since.

5. Who or What inspires you?
I’m rather a color addict and continually find inspiration through new color combinations. I love the “shabby chic” and “cottage-style” décor and find inspiration through that as well and just anything vintage.

6. What is your favorite item in your shop and why?
My favorite item would have to be my Shabby Pink Ring of Roses. It was one of my first attempts in thread crochet during a time when my husband was first diagnosed with cancer. Thread crochet quickly taught me patience and provided me with much needed moments of reflection. Since this doily has become one of my top sellers.

My shop is named Primgals Primitive Palette. I chose the name as it best represented what I do. I love to paint primitive items for the home, for everyday use and holidays.

Iam very eclectic. I love to paint on found items at thrift stores, tag sales etc. I also purchase some of my surfaces, such as the switch plates, and soaps.

I have crafted all my life, starting at the age of 8 when I took my first ceramic class. I have had a love of painting ever since.

Colonial or Primitive art of any kind. I love to see homes that are decorated in this style. I have some very favorite artists also such as Terrye French, Donna Atkins, and John Sliney.

I just love my soaps! They are unique, as I go through a five step process to make them appear as old as they look. it is always such fun to come up with new and different designs for them. Supplies To Make 3 Baskets

Finished size: approx. 9 inches x 6 inches x 6 inches

Main Fabric----------30 inches x 45 inches wide
Lining Fabric---------30 inches x 45 inches wide
Heavy Duty Sew-In Interfacing----60 inches x 20 inches wide
3--8 ½ x 11 pieces of freezer paper
6--8 ½ x 11 pieces of tea-dye muslin
Matching thread

For each basket:

Cut 3 piece A from main fabric
Cut 2 Piece B from main fabric
Cut 3 piece A from lining fabric
Cut 2 Piece B from lining fabric
Cut 3 piece A from heavy duty interfacing
Cut 2 Piece B from heavy duty interfacing

These five pieces will be cut from fabric, lining and interfacing.

Printing the image.
You can buy fabric sheets that are ready made for printing on or print the reversed images that are included on to iron-on transfer paper which you then iron on to muslin.
You can also iron your muslin to the same size freezer paper and print directly on to the fabric. I recommend an Epson printer and Epson durabrite ink which is permanent if you are going to do this as most other inks will wash out.

This is juat a sampling of images available.

Print the feedsack image onto fabric:
Cut the printed image out, leaving ¼” seam allowance all around it. With right sides together, lay the image on a same size piece of muslin. Stitch around, leaving a 2” opening for turning. Turn right side out and press. Place the image on the front of the main fabric, centering it. Stitch it to the fabric all around the outside edge.

You can also print the reversed images on to fabric transfer paper and then iron the image on to the front panel.

Directions:

MAIN BASKET:
Pin the interfacing to the wrong side of the main fabric pieces. Stitch the interfacing to the fabric around all the edges, ¼ inch from the edge.
Do this for all 5 outer pieces. You will be using these stitching lines to sew your basket together so make sure they are accurate seams.

With right sides together, pin a side piece to the bottom piece starting ¼ inch in from the edge and ending ¼ inch from the end. Stitch this seam in a ¼ inch seam allowance, backstitching at the start and finish of the seam, leaving ¼ inch on each end of the seam unsewn. The red line is the stitching line. It is important to leave the ¼ inch unsewn on each side in order to have sharp points on your finished seams.

Sew the other side to the bottom the same way.

Sew the front side and back side pieces to the bottom the same way.

You should now have four sides sewn to to the bottom of the basket.

With right sides together, pin a front panel to the side panel. Stitch from the top edge down the seam until you are ¼ inch from the bottom and backstitch. Red line is stitching line. Before you stitch this seam, make sure the bottom panel fabric is pulled down out of the way of your stitching.
Red arrow shows how this should look as you sew.

Sew the other three sides the same way.

Your outer basket is now finished. Turn right side out.

LINING:

The lining is made the same way as the main basket only you do not use interfacing.
Basket is shown inside out as you will insert the main basket inside it.

ASSEMBLING THE BASKET:

Insert the main basket into the lining, right sides will be together.
Pin together all around the top, leaving a 5 inch opening on one side.
Red line indicates opening.

Stitch around the top edge in a ¼ inch seam.

Pull the main basket through the opening. Push the lining down into the basket pushing the corners out.
Pin the basket and lining together evenly across the top. Fold the open edges in ¼ inch and pin. This opening will be sewn closed as you stitch around the top.
Topstitch along the outside edge and your basket is finished.

Fall Round Fabric Basket Tutorial

This is a good table size basket, you can fill it with apples or other fruit. Make one especially for Halloween candy. It would make a nice basket for dinner rolls on the holidays, too. The finished basket is 9 inches diameter and 9 inches tall.

Supplies To Make one 9 inch Basket

Main Fabric----------1/2 yard
Lining Fabric---------1/2 yard
Heavy Duty Sew-In Interfacing----28 inches x 22 inches
1--8 ½ x 11 pieces of freezer paper
2--8 ½ x 11 pieces of tea-dye muslin
Matching thread

Circle patterns are at the end of this post. Click on them and print them out.
Either cut two larger circles and tape them together or cut the circles on the fold.

For each basket:

Cut 1 --9 inch circle from main fabric
Cut 1 --27 ½ inch x 9 inch side panel from main fabric
Cut 1 --9 inch circle from lining fabric
Cut 1 --27 ½ inch x 9 inch side panel from lining fabric
Cut 1 --9 inch circle from heavy duty interfacing
Cut 1 --27 ½ inch x 9 inch side panel from heavy duty interfacing

Printing the image.
You can buy fabric sheets that are ready made for printing on or print the reversed images that are included on to iron-on transfer paper which you then iron on to the basket.

DIRECTIONS:

Layer the main fabric and interfacing circles together with the fabric facing right side up. Pin together and then zig zag them together around the outside edge.

With the right sides together, pin the main side panel to the interfacing. Stitch together all around the outside edge.

Pin the image in the middle of the main fabric side 3/4 inch up from the bottom. Stitch it to the main fabric.

Now fold the panel over with right sides together so that the side seams meet and the seam is aligned together. Pin and then stitch in a ¼ inch seam.

With the right sides together, pin the circle to the side panel at the bottom.

With the circle against the feeddogs and using a ¼ inch seam allowance, stitch around the seam.

Turn the basket right side out.

Make the lining basket the same as the main basket but eliminating the interfacing. Leave the lining wrong side out.

Set the main basket inside the lining basket. The right sides will be together.
Pin main basket to lining

Stitch in a ¼ inch seam, leaving a 5 inch opening for turning.

Turn the basket right side out through the opening.

Pin the basket and lining together evenly across the top. Fold the open edges in ¼ inch and pin. This opening will be sewn closed as you stitch around the top.
Topstitch along the outside edge and your basket is finished. Turn the top down to form a cuff if desired.

Here is a smaller basket I made for Thanksgiving.

SIX INCH BASKET:
Supplies To Make 1 Basket

Main Fabric----------1/3 yard
Lining Fabric---------1/3 yard
Heavy Duty Sew-In Interfacing----22 inches x 22 inches
1--8 ½ x 11 pieces of freezer paper
2--8 ½ x 11 pieces of tea-dye muslin
Matching thread

For each basket:

Cut 1 –6 ¾ inch circle from main fabric
Cut 1 –20 3/4 inch x 7 inch side panel from main fabric
Cut 1 --6 ¾ inch circle from lining fabric
Cut 1 --20 3/4 inch x 7 inch side panel from lining fabric
Cut 1 --6 ¾ inch circle from heavy duty interfacing
Cut 1 --20 3/4 inch x 7 inch side panel from heavy duty interfacing

Assemble the same as the bigger basket.

Update on Recycled Jeans Veggie Bags

I thought I would post an update on how the recycle jeans veggie bags are working out.
The most important tip I have found is to feed them with Miracle Grow fertilizer every week or two. What a difference in the plants since I started doing that.
Their potting soil is real nice, too, as it holds the water better than the cheaper kind but the cheaper stuff will work as long as you fertilize the soil.

I am so excited about my first cucumber. This was taken a few days ago. It is even bigger now. They surely do grow fast!

Another thing I did was to put pots under the bags so I am not wasting the water that drips from the bottom of the bags. Next year I will put bush type vegetables in them.

Recycled Jeans Hanging Veggie Bag Tutorial

I am always looking for a new way to recycle old jeans. Here is my tutorial for making hanging veggie bags from the leg and waistband from jeans.

Finished bag size = 20 inches long

Supply List

Pair of old jeans
Thread
Shoe Lace
4” round plastic lid
Potting soil
Plant

Cut off one lower leg from the jeans, 20 ½ inches long up from the bottom hem. The bottom hem will be the top of the bag and the cut part will be the bottom.

Turn the leg inside out. Taper the side seams by measuring in 1 ½ inches at the bottom and tapering up. Red line is the sewing line.

Make a ½ inch buttonhole 1 ¼ inch up from the bottom.

Fold the hem over ¾ inch. Zig zag stitch the hem, making sure your seam allowances both fold over to the same side so it will be easier to thread the shoelace through the casing.

Attach a large safety pin to one end of the shoe lace and pull it through the casing.

Strap:

Cut off 28 inches of the waistband for the strap, carefully cutting off the belt loops.
Optionally: Cut a 5 inch wide x 28 inch long piece of denim for a strap. Fold over lengthwise and zig zag the sides closed. Stitch to the pant leg in the same way as the waistband.

Stitch both sides of the strap to the top of the bag evenly. Zig zag along the bottom the of strap and then stitch around the stap and crossways.

Cut a slit in the plastic lid and a quarter size hole in the middle

Place the lid around the plant stem.

Very carefully gather the leaves together with your hand and place the plant inside the bag from the top and out the bottom.

The plastic lid will help to hold the soil in when you water.

Gather the bottom up as tightly as you can and tie off.

The easiest way to fill the bag is to hang it over a door knob. Fill the bag a little at a time with potting soil making sure you pack the soil tightly so there are no air holes in the soil.

You can plant flowers in the top of the bag if desired.

I used a couple of long nails to hang my plants from the house eaves. You can use large hooks if desired. They can be hung from a tree limb, a tall fence post. Wherever they will get maximum sun exposure.

I used regular potting soil in the first ones I made and I add plant food every two weeks to the top of the bag.
The last one I made I used Miracle Grow potting soil that has plant food in it so I will see which one works better.
You will have to water every day if it is very hot out.

This is a picture of my first tomato in the first bag I planted. I started the tomatoes from larger plants and it took about three weeks for the first tomato to appear. Notice how the plants grow up toward the sun.

My cucumber plants were very small and they are just now starting to flower. The plants are still very small so we will see how they do.

I finally finished this pattern for a diaper bag and changing pad that has been put on hold for quite some time.

Dress Sachet

Finished size 5 1/2"

Supply List

9” square of fabric
scrap of 1/8” wide ribbon
6” of ½” wide lace
9” of ¾” wide ruffle lace
Matching thread
4 ¼” Wood hanger
Handful of Potpourri - optional

Click on the pattern picture below and print it out.
Cut out one skirt, one waistband and two straps from fabric.
Yellow lines indicate stitching lines.

Straps:
With wrong sides together, fold the straps in half and press. With right sides together, lay a piece of lace along the open edges of the strap and stitch. (left picture) Fold the top of the lace over to the inside and topstitch the strap. (right picture)

Skirt:
With right sides together, stitch lace along the bottom of the skirt.

Fold the lace over to the inside and topstitch along the bottom of the skirt. Sew a gathering stitch along the top edge of the skirt.

With wrong sides together, fold the waistband in half. Gather the top of the skirt to fit the waistband and pin together.
Stitch across in a ¼” seam.

Fold the waistband up and topstitch on the outside.

Place the straps on the inside of the waistband following the placement on the pattern. The lace edges will be against each other.
Stitch across along the edge of the waistband.

Fold the dress in half and stitch the side in a ¼” seam.

Sew a ribbon bow to the lower waistband in the middle.

You can either fill the dress with potpourri or make a small pillow and fill it with lavender or sweet annie buds and tuck inside.

Paint the hanger to match the dress and you are done.

As parents and concerned citizens I’m sure most of us at one time or another have been confronted with the question of lead poisoning. But have you asked yourself what your government is doing to protect your children from lead contained in toys? The answer? They're banning toys, taking books from schools and libraries, hurting low income families, killing entrepreneurial spirit and risking putting the economy in an even greater depression than we've seen in decades. I'd like to introduce you to their solution: the CPSIA.Do you know about the CPSIA? No? Then I ask you to take a few minutes to find out about it.The CPSIA stands for Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, a new set of laws that will come into effect on 10 February, 2009 and will impact many, many people in a negative way. Make no mistake, this is very real. View it for yourself. If Forbes, the American Library Association and numerous other media are paying attention, perhaps you should too.How will these new laws affect you? Well, here are a few examples:To the Parents of Young Students:Due to the new law, expect to see the cost of school supplies sky rocket. Thanksgiving Recipe

The holidays seem to be approaching so quickly. Here is a delicious side dish recipe for Thanksgiving day. (If you want to cut some of the calories, leave off the topping. It is still yummy.)

Sweet Potato Casserole

Ingredients:
1 (40 ounce) can cut sweet potatoes or even better use fresh baked sweet potato
1/2 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
1/3 c. butter
1/3 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla extract

Topping:
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. chopped pecans
1/3 c. flour
1/3 c. butter, melted

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degreees. Butter a 2 quart baking dish.
Mash the sweet potatoes and add all the ingredients. Spread evenly into the baking dish.
In a separate bowl, mix the topping ingredients. Sprinkle over the top of the sweet potatoes.
Bake for 35 min.
